The people described in this article - storming out of the restaurant, crying, tearing into the staff - are caricatures of themselves. They went to the best restaurant in the country to feel “special,” and not actually to eat the food. Simply responding in such a fashion way deems them unworthy of special treatment.

From The Wiki Entry On S'mores
An alternative method for preparing the s’more is by heating the entire object in the microwave. Advantages of this method include the speed, relative ease of preparation, and the increased amount of melted chocolate. This method softens the graham cracker, which is distasteful to some. This method often removes the social element of preparation, which shies some away from them.

I Got Weirdly Sad
watching a video of MJ dancing around on some riduclous stage during a performance in Europe while tons of white people freaked out. MJ’s dead. Crazy.
The only memories of music I have from being really young, about 5 or 6, are random Indian songs and MJ’s stuff - especially, the video for Smooth Criminal. I still try to do the lean sometimes.

The thing about traveling with people is that you don’t really know anything about them and they tend to try to define themselves through their thoughts on the country they’re traveling through. This is unfortunate.

More Than A Game
Saw it today and it was pretty sweet. Unfortunately, I missed the first showing opening night when LeBron and the rest of the guys showed up for a Q&A. I’m told the crowd lost it.
One thing impressed upon me by the film was LeBron’s commitment to his friends and Ohio. While every sequence that examined the background of the five friends/teammates was impressive, obviously the...

What Is A "Sequentialist"?
Thomas Crothers says:
Sequentialists believe that by first developing the rule of law, traditionally authoritarian societies will create the necessary mechanisms and habits of control and restraint to ensure that potentially chaotic or unpredictable processes of mass political participation do not get out of hand.
That isn’t what this sequentialist is. And this isn’t it either.
When We Were Kings
The idea that the Lakers are now “automatics,” working the other team over through transcendent teamwork - an ability to simply look at the defense, make sense of the disorder (“read” it), and chose the right option at any given moment - is pretty sweet.
That would be what Winter called “the automatics,” a state where the coaches didn’t have to call plays because the...

I asked my dad, “Do you ever wonder if I’m your kid?”
He laughed, and said, “No.”
I asked, “What about when I do stuff that’s really annoying?” (As I’d done that day.)
Another smirk from my dad. And he said, “That’s karma.”
It’s all dharma.

On Flashbacks and Montages
The nearly silent, budding-relationship-to-marriage-montage in “Up” is that movie’s equivalent of Anton Ego’s ratatouille-induced moment of nostaligia in “Ratatouille”; which is to say, it’s really damn awesome.

Chung made a living by growing tea and fruit in the mountains. Recalling that he was stung by an entire nest of paper wasps more than a decade ago, he said with his heart still fluttering with fear that he was patching a leak in the water pipes across a river valley that day and disturbed a paper wasp nest by accident. He said that his head and legs were stung by more than 300 furious...

Dancing is the easiest path to intergration in Moroccan culture. More specifically, attending a wedding will have people calling your name you have never seen before. There were definitely some awkward moments, probably self-created, but I did enjoy myself during the festivities. Things again are not much different from the weddings I have attended before except the gender separation,...

“There’s no question people are eating more,” Mr. Becker said as he darted around his shop in a blue pinstripe suit, a navy baseball cap and flip-flops. “This is an affordable comfort food. What kind of a life is it if you’re not eating something good?”
It is a sentiment shared by Melissa Lowinger, 20, a senior at Yeshiva University who visits the shop weekly with her grandparents...

Finally caught a Grizzly Bear show. I’d missed seeing them on two ocassions. Once was when they were opening for TV on the Radio at the 9:30 Club, only their tour bus brokedown in Baltimore and they never got to DC. New Takes On Old Photos Continue To Roll In Today →
Some previously unreleased color photos of Hitler.
These photos remind me of when Walter and I went to see Downfall. I believe at the time we were both sufficiently flummoxed by the movie (and the lunatic things it depicted) to describe it simply as “insane.”

While the original image of the “tank man” might be described as an icon (a representation with purely symbolic and decontextualized meaning), this photograph makes clearer (for a number of reasons that include all the other people in the photo running away and the eye-level perspective) that this was a regular dude carrying his groceries home, but then decided to do something...

Unripe? Says, who? →
I’ve often eaten “unripe” fruit and enjoyed it. In India (and so, also at home), we nearly always have a pickle made of green, unripened mangoes. As the article suggests, the variety of mango that is eaten green is one that would not be eaten when mature.
